Herbal Cures: WartsRaised growths on the skin or mucous membranes, warts are caused by papillomavirus. The virus enters the skin through a cut or a scratch, then incubates for several months before blossoming. Warts come in several varieties. Common warts infect the hands, face, knees, or scalp, especially those of young children; they are hard, grayish, and rough-textured. Flat warts are flattopped, flesh-colored growths, sometimes itchy; these occur mainly on the wrist, the backs of the hands, and the face. Particularly stubborn are plantar warts, which grow on the soles of the feet. These warts are flat because of the pressure put on them, and they are often very painful. A fourth variety is genital warts, pink cauliflower-like areas that require immediate treatment. In women, genital warts may infect the cervix and cause a greater risk of cervical cancer. Doctors have several ways to treat warts, but none is perfect. Over-the-counter remedies include plasters that contain salicylic acid, which has a peeling effect. These plasters expose the hidden virus colony, which may then be attacked by the immune system. Herbs that stimulate the immune system, such as echinacea, may also be of use.
