High Cholesterol: Dealing Day to DayThere are some medical conditions we have little control over, but many people with unhealthy cholesterol levels can make positive lifestyle changes that improve their cholesterol and other aspects of their life. Keep this empowering information in mind if you are trying to lower high cholesterol or maintain a healthy cholesterol level. Exercise is one of the easiest and most enjoyable ways to improve your cholesterol. Many people who aren't used to exercising think of it as a chore, but it needn't be boring. Taking an after-dinner stroll, tending a flower garden or trying a new bike trail can be fun as well as healthy. If you haven't exercised in a while, check with your doctor first. Start slowly and build up gradually. Try classes in yoga, kickboxing or other new interests. Your diet can actually become more varied, interesting and rich when you're improving your cholesterol level. Some people think of all fats as bad foods to be avoided, but research has shown that eating "good" fats (in moderation) can improve your cholesterol. Make a delicious salad dressing with olive oil and vinegar instead of using bottled fat-free dressings that are loaded with corn syrup. Add crunch and flavor to your oatmeal by sprinkling in walnuts instead of sugar. Smoking harms your cholesterol level, blood vessels and heart as well as many other aspects of your health. There's no better time to quit. When making lifestyle changes, it helps to include family and friends. They can add moral support in addition to making the activities more engaging. Involve the kids in growing vegetables and making a salad. Meet your exercise goals by hiking with pals. If exercise, diet and other lifestyle improvements aren't enough to control your cholesterol, your doctor may need to prescribe medication. The key to success is communication. There are many types of cholesterol drugs. Some may not work for you, and some may cause unpleasant reactions. Let your doctor know if there are problems with dosage or side effects or if there are other issues. By working together, you can come up with the treatment plan that is best for you.
