Honey Apple Crisp

Instead of a frozen dessert, try this warm, fruit-filled alternative

By: Debby Maugans

Honey apple crips
Makes 4 servings

Ingredients

1/3 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons old-fashioned oats, uncooked (not instant)
3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon, divided
1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons cold unsalted butter, divided
4 large apples, such as Gala, thinly sliced
1/3 cup local honey
Pinch of salt

Directions:

Combine 1/4 cup flour and brown sugar in a medium bowl; whisk to blend well. Mix in oats and 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon. Cut 2 tablespoons cold butter into pieces; add to flour mixture and mix into flour mixture with a fork or your fingers until crumbly. Refrigerate while preparing apples.

Place rack in center of oven and preheat to 375 degrees F. Lightly coat 4 (8- or 12-ounce) ovenproof bowls or ramekins with cooking spray; place on a baking sheet for easier handling.

Melt 1/4 cup butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Stir in honey, remaining 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon and salt. Add apples; cover and cook until tender, stirring occasionally, about 10 minutes. Spoon apples and juices into prepared baking dishes, dividing evenly. Sprinkle with oat mixture.

Bake until topping is golden brown and filling is hot, about 20 minutes. Let cool on a wire rack until lukewarm or room temperature.
