How to Find a Good Nutritionist

Question :

Do you have any clues for finding good nutritionists? Would it be okay to talk to a nutritionist online or better in person? How do I find a qualified nutritionist in my area or online?

Answer :

"Good" nutritionists, in my opinion, are therapists who use nutritional supplements to attempt improvements in disease states or to achieve optimal health. They are hard to find, though they are not always M.D.'s or D.O.'s (doctors of osteopathy).

I have offered nutritional services both in person and online (using questionnaires where I return a dictated tape about the individual along with a typewritten report on what I think should be done). I prefer working in person, of course, but find I can give far more information, better organized, if I have time to study a history and put together a program. It does prevent me from asking follow-up questions, however.

Good potential sources for nutritional therapies and services (by state and city) can be obtained from the following:

  1. American College of Advancement in Medicine (ACAM), 800-532-3688
  2. Life Extension Foundation (LEF), 800-841-5433
  3. Well-Mind Association of Greater Washington (WMAGW), 301-949-8282
  4. Dr. Whitaker's Directory of Nutrition-Oriented Physicians, 800-705-5559

Remember that nutritional consultation is not the same as medical monitoring for health conditions.

Good health,
A.N. Spreen, M.D.
