Hungry Girl: Frozen Spa Cuisine

By: Lisa "Hungry Girl" Lillien

As much as I love Lean Cuisine meals ‑- so quick and so diet friendly ‑- I avoid some of them because I tend to stick with whole grains and skip noodles and rice. However, being open-minded (and, um, hungry), I decided to give their new whole-grain Spa Cuisine line a whirl. And I was more than pleasantly surprised.

Here are a few key facts:

  • These meals are low in calories and fat. Low enough that you can toss in some steamed veggies to "fluff up" the meal and make it even more filling without making it a calorie disaster.
  • Each has some sort of whole-grain goodness ‑- in the form of brown rice, whole-wheat pasta, whole-wheat orzo, etc. These are great additions, because they're packed with fiber. Fiber helps you feel full more quickly and eat less, which is key when you're eating small portions.
  • These meals are all inspired by "leading chefs from around the country." I'm not quite sure what that means, but it sounds impressive enough to make at least some people "ooh" and/or "aah."

So let's talk turkey. (Or in this case, chicken.) How do they taste? Here's the skinny.

    Chicken in Peanut Sauce

Love this one! It has water chestnuts, carrots, snap peas and tender pieces of chicken over whole-wheat pasta. The peanut sauce rocks, and there's enough of it to go around... so I tossed in more water chestnuts and snap peas from my own private stash to fill out the meal. Even with the addition of my own personal veggies, the meal still came in at under 350 calories, and it had just seven grams of fat. Wish it had more fiber, but it's still awesome. (280 calories, 7 grams fat, 32 grams carbs, 2 grams fiber, 21 grams protein)

    Chicken Mediterranean

Two yums up! Here we have grilled chicken strips with tomatoes, olives and yellow peppers over whole-wheat spaghetti. Fancy! This one has even fewer calories, so I threw in lots of broccoli and cauliflower. Not sure how "Mediterranean" my additions were, but they were delicious and very low in calories. And to me, that's more important than remaining true to the authenticity of my frozen dinner. I ended up with a pretty large portion that remained under 300 calories. And I especially love how low in fat this one is. (240 calories, 3.5 grams fat, 35 grams carbs, 5 grams fiber, 16 grams protein)
