What's better than a big bowl of delicious, hot soup on a chilly day? But beware ‑- soup can either be a great addition to your weight loss plan or a diet-busting disaster. Here are my picks for the soup-er stars ‑- and the worst ‑- of what's out there.
Campbell's Soup at Hand: Chicken and Stars
Campbell's Soup at Hand rocks! These single-serving soups heat up in the microwave and have tops that snap back on so you can take them with you on the go. Soup at Hand comes in a bunch of great flavors, but my favorite is Chicken and Stars. It's the lowest-calorie of the bunch, with only 70 per can. And it packs in three grams of protein, two grams of fiber and just 11 grams of carbs. It's a terrific portable snack ‑- anywhere, anytime.
Progresso Carb Monitor Chicken Vegetable
I love Progresso because overall I think they make the best canned soups. Their Carb Monitor Chicken Vegetable soup is completely brilliant in its simplicity. Why on Earth did it take so long for someone to create the perfect can of chicken noodle soup without the noodles? A whole can (which is pretty huge) has just 140 calories, 14 grams of protein and four grams of fat. Go, Progresso!
Tabatchnick Barley and Mushroom
Tabatchnick soups are fantastic. Once you get over the idea of how dated the packaging is (the whole boil-a-bag thing is so '80s), you'll find them to be great tasting and very low in calories and fat. Their Barley and Mushroom soup tastes as good as homemade and is crammed with mushrooms and veggies. They also make tons of other great soups that are slightly hard to find in stores but are all available at Tabatchnick.com.
