Hungry Girl: Vegging Out

By:
Lisa "Hungry Girl" Lillien

My favorite vegetarian food finds!

Dr. Praeger's Veggie Royale California Veggie Burgers

100 calories, 3.3 grams fat, 9.5 grams carbs, 4 grams fiber, 8 grams protein

Dr. Praeger makes the most delicious and unique veggie patties on this planet (possibly in the entire galaxy, but I haven't expanded my search that far yet). You can actually identify pieces of edamame, carrot, broccoli, corn and more in every bite. It's a cornucopia of veggie delights! Plus, the nutritionals are right on: low-calorie, no saturated fats, lots of fiber, no sugars, not a lot of carbs. What more could you want? The only negative about these delights is the fact that they're a little harder to find than most other veggie burgers. But you can buy them online at DrPraegers.com.

Gardenburger Meatless Riblets

160 calories, 5 grams fat, 11 grams carbs, 4 grams fiber, 17 grams protein

I'm a true carnivore. And I like nothing more than to stick my head in a giant plate of saucy ribs. But a total loss of control like that can set you back about 1,000 calories. If you love ribs, give these soy-based, BBQ-sauced swaps a try. Gardenburger has done an awesome job with this rib substitute. Even their name is cute: "Riblets." (Tee hee.) But forget what they're called ‑- they taste fantastic! Eat them alone, or nestle one in a Wonder light bun and top it with rinsed coleslaw (a little trick to get rid of the fatty mayo). Tony Roma, eat your heart out!

Morningstar Farms Philly Cheese Steak Burgers

120 calories, 6 grams fat, 6 grams carbs, 3 grams fiber, 10 grams protein

If you're a fan of authentic Philly cheese steak sandwiches, you will absolutely love these patties. With onions, green peppers and melted cheese, these burgers taste exactly like a good old-fashioned cheese steak sandwich, with a fraction of the calories and fat. HG tip: Grill up some extra onions and serve on a low-cal bun. Yum!

Boca Meatless Chili

150 calories,1 gram fat, 25 grams carbs, 12 grams fiber, 20 grams protein

Boca's new bowls of meatless chili are delicious 150 calorie snacks or meals. Great alone, on top of a salad or on a guilt-free hot dog or burger, this chili is low in calories, practically fat free and delicious. Just pop a bowl in the microwave, and voila, guilt-free chili appears before you! To make this stuff taste even better, we recommend spicing it up with Frank's Red Hot, and topping it off with chopped onions and/or fat-free shredded cheese. Chili-rific!

Amy's Kitchen Mexican Tamale Pie

150 calories, 3 grams fat, 27 grams carbs, 4 grams fiber, 5 grams protein

Amy is a genius! Her Tamale Pie has just 150 calories (and 2 points, if you're counting). This organic, unbelievably delicious, authentic Mexican treat is a yummy mix of pinto beans, corn, zucchini and crushed tomatoes, all topped with a light polenta. This is one of my favorite things to come out of Amy's magical kitchen (and that's saying something because I really love Amy's). Try one of these low fat, high fiber frozen treats. They're the perfect light lunch, snack or great addition to any dinner. Fantastico!
