Questions for your doctor on hyperthyroidism

Preparing questions in advance can help patients have more meaningful discussions with their physicians regarding their conditions. Patients may wish to ask their doctor the following questions about hyperthyroidism:

  1. What are the first signs that I may have hyperthyroidism?

  2. How will you diagnose my hyperthyroidism?

  3. How should I prepare for blood tests or imaging tests?

  4. What is the likely source of my hyperthyroidism?

  5. Do I have any of the conditions related to hyperthyroidism?

  6. Do I have Graves' ophthalmopathy?

  7. What are my treatment options? What are the pros and cons of these treatments?

  8. How long will I need to take my antithyroid medication or radioactive iodine?

  9. Can my treatment with radioactive iodine set off radiation detectors, such as at an airport? How long after my treatment is finished could this happen? Should I have a letter from you so I can inform security personnel of this side effect?

  10. Will I need to take a thyroid supplement for the rest of my life?

  11. What is my long-term prognosis?
