Improving Concentration

Question :

How can I change my diet to maximize my ability to concentrate? Are there supplements I can take?

Answer :

Yes there are, one of which has been used for more than 5,000 years. First, trash any sugary foods, which cause blood-sugar fluctuations and insulin surges that can make you feel tired and confused. Refined flour (also in bread, pasta, and cereals), which converts to sugar as soon as it hits a salivary enzyme in your mouth, should be eliminated as well.

Besides a good multivitamin/mineral supplement, probably the best-known supplement for concentration is the herb ginkgo biloba, which is now receiving rave reviews from the popular press, and even some medical sources.

Finally, snack frequently on high-protein foods so you're never hungry (low blood sugar), and get adequate sleep (we'll discuss nutrients for sleep another time ... there are some good ones).

Good Health,
A.N. Spreen, M.D.
