Insemination & Miscarriage

By:
Mark Perloe

Question :

Is there any evidence that artificial insemination or other infertility treatments may cause miscarriages? I was 17 weeks pregnant and lost my baby, and I've heard the same stories from other women who also got pregnant through infertility treatments.

Answer :

Artificial insemination does not increase the risk of miscarriage. While it may seem that this is the case, one must consider the reason why the insemination is necessary. In many cases, the infertility may be due to abnormal sperm or advanced maternal age. As both of these conditions may be associated with an increased risk of miscarriage, it might appear that insemination causes miscarriage. But, in reality, it is the underlying condition that is responsible and not the insemination.
