Is Childlessness Dangerous?

By:
Mark Perloe

Question :

I am 38 and am unable to have children (husband is low and I am not sure what is wrong with me). I was wondering if there are ANY side effects for women who never bear children? I have heard warnings about weight problems, thyroid or hormonal problems, depression, etc. that have me concerned.

Answer :

Certainly if you are unable to fulfill the role you have perceived for yourself, you may experience depression. If you think this may be the case for you, I strongly recommend counseling to help you decide if donor eggs or other forms of parenting, such as adoption or foster parenting, are for you.

As for physical conditions, women who have been pregnant have a lower risk of ovarian cancer and endometrial cancer. Breast cancer is reduced by breastfeeding. Still, you can experience the same protective benefits by taking just one year of birth control pills. The longer you take them, the less your risk for ovarian cancer. I am not aware of an increased risk of thyroid problems or weight problems if you have not been pregnant.
