Is There a Cure for Condomphobia?

By:
Ruth Westheimer

Question :

Could a man have "Condomphobia?" I went to bed with a man whose penis shrunk while trying to put on a condom. What suggestions do you have to remedy this situation? I already tried asking him if there was anything that I could to do help, i.e. oral sex.

Answer :

The male sexual apparatus is very delicate. If a man worries about losing his erection, for whatever reason, it often becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. My first suggestion is not to make an issue out of it, because the more pressure you put on him, the harder it will be for him. The best thing that you can do is to make the experience of putting on the condom as sexy as possible. Maybe if you play with his penis beforehand and make him very excited and then you put the condom on as part of this sexual play, he will be able to overcome his anxiety. If that does not work, then I suggest that he see a sex therapist.
