IUD & Miscarriage

By:
Mark Perloe

Question :

I recently experienced two miscarriages, both in the first trimester. I already had two normal pregnancies before the last two miscarriages. Is it possible that my miscarriages might have been caused by using an IUD after my last normal pregnancy? I used the IUD for about eight years.

-- Fran

Answer :

The IUD may have caused scarring inside the uterus. This is called Asherman's Syndrome and may be associated with an increased risk of miscarriage. An X-ray test called a hysterosalpingogram (HSG) or a saline unltrasound may be helpful in determining whether you have this condition.
Other causes -- such as immune abnormalities, polyps, fibroids, adenomyosis, chromosomal anomalies, age-related factors, hormonal disorders or ovulation disorders -- may all play a role in miscarriage. I would recommend a thorough evaluation before proceeding.
