Questions for your doctor on pain relief in labor

Preparing questions in advance can help patients have more meaningful discussions with their physicians regarding their conditions. Patients may wish to ask their doctor or healthcare professional the following questions regarding pain relief in labor and delivery:

  1. What can I expect in terms of pain during labor and delivery?

  2. What is natural childbirth?

  3. Who should get a copy of my birth plan with my preferences?

  4. Who will be responsible for monitoring my pain during labor and delivery?

  5. What type of pain relief will be tried first during my labor?

  6. What type of medications might be used during my labor?

  7. What are the benefits and risks of these medications?

  8. How will these drugs affect my baby?

  9. What is the difference between an epidural and a spinal block?

  10. Is there a restriction on when I can receive an epidural or spinal block?

  11. Will I be able to receive a “walking epidural”?

  12. What will I receive for anesthesia if I need a C-section?

  13. Will I automatically receive local anesthesia for an episiotomy?

  14. Does the medical facility offer alternative birthing practices, such as under water?

  15. Where can I go for childbirth classes that can provide Lamaze training?
