Longer menstrual cycle after stopping pill

By:
Peg Plumbo

Question :

I am 32 and and I've always had a 29-day cycle. However, since I went off the pill, it has changed to 33 to 35 days. Can this lengthening of my cycle be caused by the pill?

Answer :

There is no way of saying for sure why your cycle has lengthened. It is generally the first half of the cycle which is the most prone to disruption. Something early in the cycle is delaying ovulation. It could be stress, climate or dietary changes -- or it could be just a normal adaptation as you get older. Once ovulation occurs, menstruation almost always starts two weeks later (provided you aren't pregnant).
