The following is an Editorial Resource from YourTotalHealth.

My husband’s tried to lower his cholesterol with exercise, diet and medicine. What else can he do?

For young, healthy people, I would recommend the following:

First, visit the American Heart Association risk calculator and input all of your information to understand your actual risk of having a heart attack. This is the first step in deciding whether you need to make any changes in what already seems to be a healthy lifestyle.

Second, use the calculator again, this time making the change you’re planning (whether stopping drinking, reducing blood pressure or taking cholesterol lowering medication, etc.).

Look at the risk difference between the two scores. If the difference is worth it, then you should make the change; if not, don't sweat it.

I'm a big fan of this kind of quantitative, informed decision-making, which is much better than just having a doctor tell you what to do.

Heart disease runs in the family. What does this mean for me?
