Meet the Expert: Dr. Pamela Peeke

By: Liz Neporent

When it comes to losing weight, technology can be a good thing. Especially when it brings a renowned physician, health expert and best-selling author like Dr. Pamela Peeke straight into your living room. If you've been looking for a tool to help you transform your mind and body, the new Body for Life for Women DVD is it. The 12-week program includes a unique week-by-week blueprint for a complete lifestyle makeover plus a 30-minute full-body fitness routine you can adapt as you get into better shape.

iVillage caught up with the busy doctor to ask her a few questions about the DVD. Here's what she had to say.

On the DVD you talk about the four hormonal milestones and how they relate to your body weight. Can you explain these milestones?

The first one is puberty, otherwise known as an introduction to PMS. One day you have no estrogen, and then suddenly you do. This is when your menstrual cycles kick in and the roller coaster begins. A majority of women experience any of a wide range of symptoms from physical pain to mood changes. Many experience a big increase in appetite, which of course can lead to weight gain. Realize that it's happening and prepare for it. Even when you feel bad, don't stop physical activity. Instead, do it in moderation. It'll help calm you and control your appetite. When you feel the urge to grab sugar- and fat-laden foods, allow yourself to have a little extra something to take the heat off. I have one patient who keeps a "PMS jar" filled with two-ounce zip-lock snack bags containing the treats she really likes. That's a good way to control your urges ‑- no one ever became obese by having two or three servings of a PMS snack!
