Menstruation: Why Do I Experience Midcycle Bleeding with Clots?

By:
Kelly Shanahan

Question :

Recently I have been getting rather heavy discharge halfway during my monthly cycle. This lasts a few days and has become longer in recent months. It is no longer just clots, but also is also some blood flow, though it tends to be more brown in color than a standard period. I also tend to feel slightly nauseous. Is this normal, or should I get this checked? Could this be endometriosis?

Sinead

Answer :

Midcycle bleeding and spotting (and a brown discharge is usually old blood) can be the sign of many conditions. It could be an ovarian cyst. It could be pregnancy, depending on how long it has been occurring (the nausea makes me wonder). It could be a number of things included: an infection, a cervical polyp -- or endometriosis.

You should see your gynecologist for an exam. While some women normally have a bit of bleeding associated with ovulation, the other possibilities need to be checked out -- and treated if present.
