Molotov Cocktails

Reviewed By: Susan Janoff, MS RD LD/N

You close your eyes when the hot dog vendor passes. When the ice cream truck comes down the street, you run the other way. You told the Girl Scouts, "Sorry, not this year." It's a struggle, but you’re committed to living a healthy lifestyle, taking care of your body and fitting into your skinny jeans again. You stare down all purveyors of tempting summer treats and refuse to succumb to their powers.

But here comes one hidden challenger. It's your waiter, and he doesn't want you to miss out on Margarita Mondays. We know it's easy to get so distracted by the paper umbrellas and fruity adornments that you forget you're sipping the caloric equivalent of a Big Mac, so here's our guide to spotting and apprehending the top five alcohol offenders.

Mojito (1 1/2 ounces of simple syrup or 2 to 3 tablespoons of ultrafine sugar, 2 ounces of rum, soda water, ice, lime wedge and sprig of mint): 235 calories

Approximate caloric equivalent: Six Thin Mints (We're not exaggerating here!)

Yes, they're trendy and they have classic appeal. Ernest Hemingway was said to be a fan. And they've got those refreshing mint sprigs that perk you up on a hot summer day. On second thought, maybe it's the three tablespoons of sugar per serving that really has you wired. If you're looking for a zingy, refreshing drink with less than a third of the calories, try a vodka and diet soda with a squeeze of lime.

Smart swap: Diet Sprite and vodka (1 ounce of vodka), 65 calories
