Mouthwash Voluntarily Recalled by Manufacturer

April 12 (iVillage Total Health) -- The maker of two mouthwash products marketed for children is voluntarily recalling all 4 million bottles of the liquid rinses because they may contain harmful microorganisms, the company announced.

New Jersey-based McNeil-PPC Inc. (a division of Johnson & Johnson) said two brands of its Listerine Agent Cool Blue Plaque-Detecting Rinse -- Glacier Mint and Bubble Blast -- may pose significant health risks for people with weakened immune systems. The company said preservatives in the mouthwash are not adequate in fighting certain microorganisms.

No one has reported any adverse reactions to the mouthwash, but the company is asking consumers and dental professionals to discontinue using the product. Other Listerine products are not affected by the recall. Full refunds are available by calling the company's toll-free consumer hotline at 1-888-222-0249. Additional information on the recall is available at http://www.agentcoolblue.com.

Agent Cool Blue was introduced in 2006 and features a cartoon character on the front of the bottle. The product helps users identify plaque left on the teeth. When swished in the mouth, it leaves plaque deposits with a blue tint. Plaque buildup allowed to remain on teeth is a major cause of tooth decay and cavities.

"We have voluntarily initiated this recall of Agent Cool Blue Plaque-Detecting Rinse because our primary concern is that consumers have complete confidence in the safety and effectiveness of our products," Paul Sturman, president of consumer healthcare, said in a press release. "This voluntary action is in keeping with our longstanding policy of providing timely and effective consumer information about all our products."

The company notified the U.S. Food and Drug Administration about the preservative problem prior to initiating the recall.
