Multiple IVF Cycles

By:
Mark Perloe

Question :

I have tried IVF for nine cycles without success. Does any research indicate how much my risk of ovarian cancer is increased because of my exposure to the medications during IVF?

--Joan

Answer :

Nine times ... WOW. I am surprised that any physician would not have ethical problems performing that many ovulation induction cycles for IVF. But maybe there are other factors I don't know about here.

There is no credible data suggesting IVF raises risk of ovarian cancer. However, I am aware of no studies that have looked at women who have completed nine IVF cycles. Not many patients are wealthy enough, desperate enough, nor able to find physicians who would perform nine stimulation cycles for IVF, so I would guess your situation is quite unusual.
