Questions for your doctor regarding nitrates

Preparing questions in advance can help patients to have more meaningful discussions with their physicians regarding their conditions. Patients may wish to ask their doctor the following questions about nitrates:

  1. What condition are nitrates being prescribed for?

  2. Which type of nitrate is best for me?

  3. Is there an estimate of how long I will have to take nitrates?

  4. What is the dosage?

  5. What should I do if I miss a dose?

  6. What are the side effects of nitrates?

  7. What are the alternatives if I have trouble tolerating nitrates?

  8. Are nitrates safe if I have low blood pressure, recent heart attack or stroke, kidney disease, liver disease, glaucoma or another condition?

  9. Are nitrates safe if I am pregnant or nursing?

  10. Would a lower dose be equally effective?

  11. Will these affect other medications I take?

  12. Which dietary supplements and vitamins should I be careful of?
