Only One OvaryBy:
Can a woman conceive if she has only one active ovary? If yes, what are the chances of conceiving compared to having two ovaries? Would any type of fertility treatment help?
Mala
The absence of one ovary should not impair fertility in the least. However, this assumes that there is no scarring from the surgical procedure in which the other ovary was removed and that whatever disease process affected the removed ovary is not affecting the remaining ovary.
The ovary contains far more eggs than you will ever use in ovulation. In fact, each month a few hundred eggs begin the race to see which will be the one lucky enough to ovulate. The others shrivel up. For some yet-unknown reason, when only one ovary is present, the remaining one compensates. Fewer eggs enter the race to ovulation, and enough remain to keep you ovulating throughout your normal reproductive life.
No fertility treatment is needed to boost the remaining ovary. One word of caution, though. Smoking is toxic to eggs (and to those of a developing daughter if the mother smokes during pregnancy). This can cut short your reproductive capabilities. To keep your ovary operating at its best, don't smoke.
