Options after Ovarian Failure

By:
Mark Perloe

Question :

I am 23 years old and have been diagnosed with premature ovarian failure. I am wondering what options I would have in the future for having a child. I have read information stating that once you are two years into POF there isn't even a possibility of in vitro fertilization due to the deterioration of the uterus. I am hoping you may have some alternatives.

Becky

Answer :

Premature ovarian failure does not adversely affect the uterus. After diagnosis, your physician will very likely place you on estrogen and progesterone hormone replacement. This treatment should keep things in order and allow you to consider IVF with donated eggs at some time in your future.

Another benefit of the hormone replacement is that it seems to induce remissions of the condition in about 1-2 percent of patients each year. This is more likely in women where a specific cause of POF was not identified.
