Period Stops after First YearBy:
When I was 11 I had my first period. After one year it disappeared. I am 15 years old now and it still isn't coming. I tell my mother that I am having my period because if I go for a gynecological exam, my mother will find out I am not a virgin, because she is a gynecologist as well. Am I sterile?
Esther
You are probably not sterile, but there are many reasons that periods can disappear. For example, you may be too thin -- or too heavy. Either one can cause periods to stop. You may be having a problem with your thyroid gland, or another hormonal problem. If you are using birth control pills, that sometimes causes periods to stop.
If you are not on the pill, you should see a doctor for evaluation. Lack of periods due to anything besides being on the pill or DepoProvera shots can have long-term consequences such as osteoporosis later in life or even an increased chance of cancer of the uterine lining when you are older. Appropriate treatment can prevent these complications and bring your periods back.
I do not know where you live, but if you are in or near a large city you could probably find a doctor who does not know your mother -- or who will see you without informing your mom that you have had sex before. I certainly hope that you are practicing safe sex and are using a condom!
