Persistent Bacterial VaginosisBy:
I was diagnosed with bacterial vaginosis five months ago. I took the antibiotics and did the yeast infection cures but still I have it. I was told to use yogurt to even out the levels in my vaginal area, but it is still as bad as before. I have a bad discharge, I'm in pain most of the time, and I'm having pain with sex. I need a cure so that it will go away. I have made an appointment with a different doctor but that's not till the end of the month. I itch, smell and hurt. What can I do?

First and foremost, has your partner been treated as well? Although bacterial vaginosis is not a traditional sexually transmitted disease, it, like yeast, may be passed back and forth between partners. In general, the first time it is diagnosed, we may just treat the woman, as that is effective most of the time. However, if the infection keeps coming back, both partners must be treated.
The usual treatment for bacterial vaginosis, also known as Gardnerella, is oral metronidazole (Flagyl) 500mg twice a day for a week. During the week you are both being treated you should abstain from intercourse. The medication has some side effects, most commonly a metallic taste in one's mouth and stomach upset. If Flagyl and alcohol are taken together (and "together" in this instance means within a few days of each other), you may become violently ill.
Until you get to see the new doctor, I suggest trying a Betadine douche one time and avoiding sex. DO NOT douche or use any over-the-counter medications for at least three days before seeing the doctor. And make sure your partner seeks medical attention as well.
