Pregnancy: How Harmful Are MSG and Food Dyes?By: Question : What are the concerns, if any, regarding the consumption of MSG and artificial food dyes during pregnancy? I have read that animal studies suggest it is best to avoid both. I recently discovered that there is MSG in the base of a soup that I have been eating during my pregnancy. Should I be concerned? Dawn Answer : Animal studies have suggested that the offspring of mice fed large amounts of MSG while pregnant did not do as well in maze tests. As far as humans go, the amount of MSG or artificial food dyes a pregnant mom would likely ingest would probably not cause harm; no human studies, however, have been done. MSG and artificial dyes are found mainly in processed foods. As always, it is best to eat a wide variety of foods, and the fresher the better. If you consume a diet high in whole grains and fresh fruits and vegetables, you can avoid excessive amounts of food additives. A small amount of MSG in a soup base that you eat occasionally should not cause any problems for your baby if you eat a well-rounded diet.
