Pregnancy: Is Stress Harmful to the Baby?

Question :

I recently found out I was pregnant. Since then I feel so stressed and worried. Can this be harmful to the baby?

--D.A.

Answer :

Stress and worry do not in and of themselves harm a developing baby, but if you are not taking proper care of yourself, that could potentially be harmful. If you are so stressed you are not eating properly, then you may not be able to supply all the nutrients baby needs to grow properly.

I'm wondering why you are stressed. The way your question is worded almost implies that being pregnant is what is stressing you out. Are you ambivalent about having this baby? If so, you should talk to your significant other and your doctor to explore all the options available to you. If you are just worried about having a normal baby, then rest assured you are not alone; these types of worries are almost universal. I'd be a bit concerned about a pregnant woman who said she wasn't worried about anything at all!

The most important thing for you to do right now is talk about your feelings. If you can't discuss them with the baby's father, talk to a family member or friend. Your doctor can help as well, and if necessary, can refer you to a counselor or therapist. You do need to address what is bothering you, but the worry itself will not hurt your baby.
