Preparing for a Planned Pregnancy

By:
Mark Perloe

Question :

I can't find any information on preparing my body for a planned pregnancy. I have heard that there are certain vitamins and minerals that you should take to prepare. Could you please help me? I am sure there are others out there who would like to properly plan for a pregnancy.

Maura

Answer :

It is important that you get into the best shape possible before you attempt pregnancy. If you smoke -- STOP. If you drink -- STOP. If you are a couch potato, start exercising. Even a simple walk for 15 minutes a day can get you in shape.

Eat correctly: Lower your fat intake by cutting out fried foods and red meat, and increase grains and fresh fruit and vegetables. Take a multivitamin with 1mg folic acid per day to reduce the risk of certain fetal anomalies. If you have any health problems, you should review your options with your doctor before attempting pregnancy.
