Procedures after Second MiscarriageBy: Question : I just miscarried this week, at about 10 weeks pregnant. This is my second miscarriage this year. They found no medical reason for the miscarriages. My doctor said that I could start trying again any time. Is this always true? I did not have a D&C after the first miscarriage, and I was wondering if that may have caused the second miscarriage. I have not had a D&C yet with this second miscarriage either. Should I? Rhonda Answer : I do not believe that a D&C is necessary for each and every miscarriage. But if a fetus was seen at the time of a second miscarriage, then it should be examined. An evaluation of placental chromosomes and immune staining can help determine potential causes for miscarriage. Most physicians now recommend such an evaluation after two pregnancy losses. It seems your physician's approach is a bit outdated. While much concerning the diagnosis and management of recurrent pregnancy loss is still controversial and lacks solid clinical data, asking you to wait until you lose another pregnancy before your doctor becomes concerned seems unconscionable to me. Screening for immune system abnormalities, uterine structural problems, genetic or immune factors that increase blood clotting, infection and hormonal disorders are in order at this point. I would suggest you seek consultation with a skilled reproductive endocrinologist who is willing to determine whether any of these factors may have played a role in your pregnancy loss.
