A Closer Look: How to Start a Smoker's Diary

Reviewed by: Timothy Yarboro, MD

Quit Smoking Tips: Keep a DiaryOne of the best ways to prepare for quitting is to identify why, when and with whom you light up. Writing down some simple information in a Smoker’s Diary will help you identify your smoking triggers and stressors—and give you insight into how to beat them.

Relax, you don’t need to be Shakespeare or Toni Morrison to keep one. Simply use this Smoker’s Diary. We’ve adapted it with permission from the Canadian Cancer Society’s brochure "For Smokers Who Want to Quit—One Step at a Time."

You might think you know why you smoke, but the information you get might just surprise you. You might not have realized, for instance, that you light up mainly when drinking alcohol, that you puff a lot while chatting on the phone, or that you smoke partly to get away from your family or boss. Whatever you learn, you can use the knowledge to help devise your quit-smoking plan.

Isn’t now a good time to start your Smoker’s Diary? To get started:
