Sarcoidosis & High ProlactinBy: Question : I recently found out that my prolactin levels are slightly elevated (46). An MRI showed no tumor, and the doctor has prescribed Parlodel. I just read your answer on High Prolactin Levels, and I notice that you cited sarcoidosis as a possible cause of high prolactin levels. My father has sarcoidosis. Could this disease be hereditary? How would I find out if this is my problem, and what can I do about it?
Jill Answer : Sarcoidosis is most commonly seen in the lung. While it can occur in the pituitary gland, that is quite rare. There is some evidence that there may be a genetic link, but that also would be quite rare. It is best diagnosed by chest X-ray. For more information on sarcoidosis, please visit the Sarcoidosis Home Page or the website of the Sarcoidosis Research Institute.
