Shared IVF Cycle

By:
Mark Perloe

Question :

I am considering doing a shared IVF cycle, in which I donate half of my eggs retrieved to someone in need of eggs, and in return, I get a break on the cost of my IVF cycle. I was wondering if you knew the "normal" routine of doing this. My clinic has told me that I would only be compensated for half the costs of my cycle (up to and including retrieval) -- about $2,700. I thought that this was very small compensation. I understand that if I were only donating, I would have all medical expenses paid for up to retrieval, and also would be paid $3,000 to $5,000. I would just like all the expenses up to and including retrieval to be paid for, and no further compensation. Is that a realistic arrangement?

Answer :

As you already find the financial details associated with this unacceptable, consider your reaction if the recipient gets pregnant and you don't! How will you feel about the fact that you have given up half of your eggs? Most IVF programs avoid this procedure because of increased stress and concerns if the number of eggs is limited.

I believe that the time, stress and expense associated with assisted reproductive technologies require doing everything possible to ensure the best chance of success. Giving away half your eggs is not, in my opinion, the most cost-effective approach to pregnancy.
