Sinus Problems & GERD

Question :

Is there a link between GERD and chronic sinus problems?

L.

Answer :

GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) is a common illness caused by the acid reflux from the stomach into the esophagus. This leads to such symptoms as heartburn, regurgitation, acid taste in the back of the mouth and sometimes chest pain.

GERD can also produce symptoms not directly related to acid reflux in the esophagus. These symptoms, known as extraesophageal manifestations of GERD, include: asthma, chronic cough, hoarseness, laryngitis, night-time choking, pneumonia and even dental problems. Of these diseases, the most evidence exists to support a link between GERD and asthma and laryngitis.

A link between GERD and chronic sinus problems has not been as well documented in the medical literature. However, given that GERD can potentially affect the pharynx, larynx, and mouth, it is not difficult to imagine that sinus involvement could also occur. It would be important to rule out other more common causes of sinusitis before attributing the problem to GERD. A careful evaluation by an ear, nose and throat doctor would be helpful in such patients.
