Sore Breasts

Kelly Shanahan

Question :

I am 17. I often get really sore breasts. I don't know if this is normal, and I'm too scared to ask anyone. It hurts so bad that I can't touch my chest or wear a bra. What can I do?

--Silje

Answer :

First, see your doctor for an exam, and learn how to examine your breasts yourself. You should never be too scared to ask your doctor anything -- that's why we're here.

Most of the time sore breasts are due to very benign, innocuous reasons. Your breats can become sore during your monthly cycle. Caffeine is a common culprit; if you drink a lot of colas, teas or coffee, cut down. Sometimes a poorly fitting bra is the reason. Many women have cysts in their breasts -- again a benign condition -- that grow before a period and become painful. Vitamin E or a mild diuretic around your period may help with this swelling.
