Sores on Bikini Line

Question :

I have cyst-like inflammations (they contain pus and blood) on my bikini line (not on or in my vagina). They cause discomfort, and I can feel them even before they reach the surface. What are they, and what should I do about them?

Answer :

There are two possibilities here -- folliculitis (an inflammation around a hair follicle) and hidradenitis. The first, folliculitis, is your basic pimple or boil. This is not uncommon in the groin, where friction from underwear can block the large number of sweat glands, causing inflammation. Also - and especially if one shaves or waxes the bikini line - ingrown hairs may develop, causing similar eruptions. The other possibility, hidradenitis, is a deep infection of sweat glands; it is also found in the underarms and beneath the breasts. Hidradenitis may be more difficult to treat.

As a first step, simple measures such as hot compresses and washing with medicated soap may be helpful. Avoid shaving the delicate bikini area. Wearing looser underpants, like tap pants or men's boxers, will reduce chafing and may lessen the problem. I do not recommend feminine hygiene powders or deodorants as they serve only to increase the blockage of pores and may make the problem worse.

If these measures do not help, a visit to a gynecologist or dermatologist may be in order. Sometimes use of birth control pills will help decrease sweat gland secretions and improve hidradenitis. Sometimes, especially with severe hidradenitis, the lesions must be opened and scraped.
