Special-Occasion Sweet Treats

Sometimes a piece of fruit just doesn't satisfy like a piece of chocolate.

Follow our menu guidelines as closely as you can, and use our secrets and suggestions to reduce your reliance on sugar. But for those times when you really want to enjoy something sweet, remember these rules:

  • Pick pared-down portions (no eating cookies right out of the box).
  • Sit down and enjoy your food. Savor the texture, taste and aroma instead of eating as fast as you can. Try to focus on what you're eating, not on your television, your kids or your work.
  • Don't feel guilty! You're not giving in to a craving, you're controlling it.

Each of these sweet treats has fewer than 200 calories. Use them in place of a morning or afternoon snack, or add them to a meal as a dessert in lieu of one of the daily snacks. If you don't see your favorite listed, read labels and measure portions so each snack has no more than 200 calories. Limit these sweet treats to once or twice each day and after a few weeks you may find you don't need them at all.

  • 1/2 cup instant pudding
  • 3 fig bars
  • 7 chocolate kisses
  • 1 slice whole wheat bread with 1 tablespoon jam
  • 2 peanut butter sandwich cookies
  • 5 vanilla wafers
  • 1 ice cream sandwich
  • 1/2 cup ice cream (read the label to make sure the brand you choose has fewer than 200 calories per 1/2 cup serving)
  • 1 cup hot chocolate or chocolate milk (use skim milk)
  • 35 jelly beans (only 4 calories each)
  • 1 Twinkie
