Summary

Certain sports and exercise activities are particularly suited to providing a healthy workout for the body. These activities include basketball, dance, aerobics and yoga. They provide people with cardiovascular, strength and flexibility exercise in the form of activities that many people find enjoyable.

Common sports and exercise activities include aerobics, basketball, bicycling, dance, jogging, kickboxing, martial arts, pilates, yoga, racquetball, rollerblading, rowing, soccer, spinning, stair-stepping, swimming, tennis and walking. Most of these offer cardiovascular strengthening and endurance. Some also involve strength-training (e.g., rowing) and/or flexibility exercises (e.g., pilates, yoga). Different activities burn calories at different rates.

Following proper exercise and sports safety rules and regulations can greatly reduce a person’s risk of injury while participating in sports and exercise activities. A coach, trainer or other fitness professional can help explain the proper techniques, regulations and safety procedures for a particular sport or activity.
