Biography:

A graduate of Columbia University College (A.B., Class of 1961) and a graduate of Cornell University Medical College (Class of 1965), Dr. Shappell completed his Internal Medicine and Cardiology training at the University of Washington in Seattle under Dr. Robert A. Bruce, the father of exercise stress testing and evaluation. He then served as a major in the U.S. Air Force as a cardiologist at Wilford Hall Hospital in San Antonio, Texas. In 1973, he established the Cardiology Training Program at the University of Saigon, under the sponsorship of the Vietnam Medical School Project. With faculty appointments at the University of Washington, University of Texas, San Antonio, University of Oklahoma and Cornell University Medical College, Dr. Shappell has published in medical journals which include the New England Journal of Medicine, American Journal of Cardiology and Circulation. As a former American Heart Association Teaching Scholar, Dr. Shappell has retained a keen interest in the education of both the general public and fellow physicians. He helped to create the Suffolk Heart Group in 1976, where he remains in the practice of Adult Cardiology.
