Tampons: Bleached or UnbleachedBy:
I have seen organic, unbleached tampons for sale in some stores. What are the risks and benefits of these tampons? Does it make any difference what type of tampon I use?
Most tampons are bleached with dioxin, a chemical which may or may not be associated with cancer; studies on this subject have had conflicting results. The companies that make unbleached tampons are hoping that fear of environmental toxins will lead you to buy their product.
To my knowledge, there is no scientific evidence that suggests unbleached tampons are "better" than bleached, or that organically-grown cotton is better than regular cotton or rayon. Perhaps more important than the type of tampon you use is to remember appropriate hygiene; change tampons every four to six hours, and always wash your hands before and after changing one. I do not recommend leaving a tampon in overnight.
