The Spa Addict on Lomi Lomi Massage

By: Mary Blackmon

What it is: Aloha! Hawaiians believe muscle tension and negative thinking can block energy flow, and they use massage to improve it. The lomi lomi massage is a beloved Hawaiian tradition that works the muscles with continuous, flowing strokes ‑- encouraging the recipient to relax, let go and simply be.

Thus lomi lomi is intended not to be just a physical experience, but also to facilitate overall healing. The Hawaiian view is that the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual are all part of the whole self ‑- when something happens on one level, all levels are affected.

What to expect: As in many forms of massage, clothing is optional. After being taken to the treatment room, the trained therapist will begin gliding her hands across your body while intermittently working the muscles more deeply in order to release tension. The combination helps to relax your mind and de-stress your body. There will be some stretching involved, and as one practitioner explained, it is almost like meditation. As your body surrenders to the experience, the more relaxed and at peace your body will become. Just imagine floating across the waves of your favorite Hawaiian island while enjoying a relaxing massage.

What it's good for: Relaxation, stress management and pampering.

Who'd love it: Anyone who prefers a soothing massage with a bit of deep tissue work over a massage with consistent deep pressure.

Who'd hate it: Anyone looking for a very intense massage.
