Like the diagnosis of thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS), treatment is somewhat controversial among physicians. In general, treatment usually involves:
- Physical therapy to strengthen the shoulder muscles to better support the collar bone (clavicle)
- Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (e.g., aspirin) to ease pain and swelling
- Exercises to correct posture, which reduces pressure on nerves and blood vessels
- Weight loss (if necessary)
In most cases of TOS, patients often improve with physical therapy, stretching, weight loss and by maintaining good posture. Surgery may be performed if these measures are ineffective. In cases of true neurologic TOS, surgery may be recommended. Surgery may involve dividing a neck muscle and removing part of the first rib. |
