Too Young for Breast Cancer?

By:
Kelly Shanahan

Question :

I'm 13. Am I too young to get breast cancer?

--Lauren

Answer :

In a nutshell, yes, you are too young to get breast cancer. What's more important to me is why you are worried about it at age 13.

If there is a lot of breast cancer in your family you may have a higher chance of developing breast cancer later on in life. If that is the case, then you need to learn how to do regular breast self-examinations so you will be aware of anything that feels different to you.

There are things that you -- and all women -- can do to lower your chance of getting breast cancer. Most important, DO NOT SMOKE. Second, either don't drink alcohol at all, or if you do (later in life, I mean -- you certainly shouldn't be drinking at age 13!), then limit alcohol to no more than the equivalent of a glass of wine a day. Third, eat lots of vegetables, especially cruciferous vegetables like broccoli and cauliflower. Also, exercise regularly and avoid becoming overweight.

And, remember, if you are worried about something, see your doctor.
