Ulcerative Colitis

Question :

What is the best diet for Ulcerative Colitis? Most doctors say diet has no effect, but that does not seem reasonable. Your help please!

Answer :

My opinion is that a doctor who says diet has no effect on ulcerative colitis has not tried diet for ulcerative colitis. (That leaves some question in my mind about whether he has the right to comment.)

This is a huge question, and we cannot adequately answer it in the space available here, but there are some definite things to consider: 1. Avoid ALL sugar and refined flour.
2. For 7 days avoid ALL wheat, refined or otherwise, then test it, looking for symptoms. (You might even have to avoid all gluten foods.)
3. Avoid stimulants of all types.
5. Avoid all drugs possible.
6. Avoid any CRAVED food for 7 days...you may be allergic to it.
7. Avoid dairy, especially milk for 21 days.
8. If this just emptied your entire pantry, you have a shot at feeling better.
9. Avoid frying anything, except wok-type food.
10. Take a STRONG L. acidophilus supplement (Klaire, Twinlab, DDS, or equivalent), meaning billions of units, 1/4 tsp (or equivalent capsules) before meals and bedtime.
11. Consider essential fatty acids (MaxEPA, flax oil).
12. Consider a strong multi-vit/min supplement (capsule, not hard pill).
13. Consider vit. C, 1000 milligrams/day.
14. You might very well need digestive enzymes, zinc, and other additional nutrients, so a good nutritional advisor might be in order.
15. As you see, this can be involved, but not hopeless (far from it), and I have seen remarkable recoveries. Don't give up, and read every health nut piece of literature you can get your hands on about the subject.
16. Consider systemic yeast, as described in The Yeast Connection, by Wm. Crook, MD.
