Urinary Incontinence FAQs

Answers from the experts

-Can a hysterectomy lead to urinary incontinence?

-I’ve had three children, and tend to leak when I sneeze and cough. I frequently use the restroom. I saw my doctor and she suggested Kegel exercises. I tried them, but they didn't seem to help. I’m so embarrassed. Should I go back to my doctor or just learn to live with the embarrassment?

-I have been diagnosed with a cystacele and incontinence. Will I need surgery or will pelvic floor exercises to put the bladder back to its normal position?

-What are the causes of bladder wall thickening?

-Why is it that I tend to leak when I'm sleeping, even though I am already on medication?

-Is it healthy for women to take baths? I am 52 years old and love a bath. I have never had any trouble, but one woman told me her doctor wanted her to stop taking baths because of bladder inflections.

-I have type 2 diabetes. I can’t get enough sleep because I have to go to the bathroom every half hour. What should I do?

-Is low blood sugar level one of the causes of frequent urination at night or urinary incontinence?

-Does drinking about two or more glasses of water at one time make the bladder go into spasm?

-Is there a chemical or some other substance in iced tea that makes you urinate frequently?

-The medications for overactive bladder say not to take them if you have trouble emptying your bladder. What’s the story?

-My husband gets up several times during the night, and often has a hard time starting to urinate. What could be causing this problem?

-I am a 41-year-old male, in good health, no enlarged prostate. But I have a “small” bladder. For the past six months I’ve been urinating more frequently. I don’t drink that much fluid, and the volume isn’t that much. I could probably hold it more, but sometimes there is a small but nagging urge to go, so I do. Any suggestions?

-My teenager still wets the bed and it is a problem which is contributing to her low self-esteem. Of course she refuses all the sleepover invitations she receives because of this problem. Should I force her to go?

-When my back is really bad and it locks and I am unable to stand, I leak urine every time. Is this just caused by weak muscles?

-Ever since I was a kid I have been wetting the bed. Now I'm 19 years old and I still wet the bed. I don't feel when I have to go to the bathroom because I'm in a deep sleep. So I wake up wet. Anything I can do?
