Urination: Why Does it Burn and Bleed?

By:
Kelly Shanahan

Question :

When I urinate, it begins to burn right before I finish, and I have some slight bleeding only after I urinate. What could this be, and do you know how I could get rid of it myself?

--Anisha

Answer :

Your symptoms are classic for a urinary tract infection. Other possibilities are interstitial cystitis, bladder or kidney stones, or -- less likely -- bladder cancer. If this has only been going on for a day or two and if you do not have a fever or a history of kidney disease, you may try cranberry or blueberry extract (available at health food stores) and drink lots of extra fluids (avoiding caffeine and alcohol). If these symptoms have gone on for more than two days, if you also have fever or back pain, or if you have other medical conditions or are pregnant, then you must see a doctor for evaluation.
