Vaccines and Fertility

By:
Mark Perloe

Question :

My husband is in the military. Soon he will be getting an anthrax vaccination. We have heard rumors that this can cause sterility. Is this true? Are there any other problems with this vaccine?

Kelley

Answer :

A Medline search reveals no recent publications suggesting any risk to fertility with anthrax vaccination or any other form of vaccination. Bear in mind, though, that although the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) requires studies regarding the effect of any medical treatment on pregnancy and miscarriage before it will approve that treatment, the FDA does not require testing for the effects of medications or vaccines on future fertility.
