Vaginal Health: Are Deodorants Safe?

By:
Kelly Shanahan

Question :

Is it safe to use feminine deodorant products? I thought I saw a news story that said using these products will increase the possibility of cervical cancer. What do you recommend for odor in that area?

--April

Answer :

Most feminine deodorant products are "safe" but unnecessary. Odor is usually due to the large number of sweat glands in the groin area and the bacteria that thrive in such a moist environment. Basic good hygiene practices, such as a daily shower, are all that is necessary to control real odor. Sometimes odor is caused by a vaginal infection. If the odor is fishy rather than just "sweaty," or if it is accompanied vaginal discharge, then you should see your gynecologist.

Products containing talc (like the old talcum powders) should not be used in the genital area. Talc has been associated with an increased risk of ovarian cancer. Most feminine deodorant sprays and baby powders today contain cornstarch rather than talc. The label should list ingredients.
