Waiting for FolliclesBy: Question : I have been on ovulation-stimulating drugs for four cycles, but even with medication, my ultrasound indicates only one follicle developing. Should we go ahead and try insemination or wait for more follicles to develop? --Michelle Answer : Your age, which you didn't mention, is really the single most important factor in predicting how your ovaries will respond to ovulation drugs. If you are over 30, I would consider a clomiphene challenge test. If the test shows that either your FSH or estradiol levels are elevated, then ovarian function may be diminished, which might explain your "single follicle ovulation." One follicle may not necessarily mean that your chances of conceiving are decreased. However, if your estrogen or uterine lining are abnormal, further testing may be in order.
