Wanting Twins

By:
Mark Perloe

Question :

Unlike most other people who dread multiple births, my husband and I want either twins or triplets in the worst way! My father was a twin and my mother had two sets of twin sisters. What are the odds of us conceiving twins? Is there any way to increase our odds? --Michelle

Answer :

Many couples ask for twins and triplets. I cringe when I hear this. Luckily, multiple gestations are rare unless you undergo ovulation induction or in vitro fertilization. Women who have multiple gestations are at increased risk for premature delivery, eclampsia (high blood pressure/seizures), birth defects, and gestational diabetes. You will likely be forced to spend much of the pregnancy in bed to minimize the risk of complications. Triplet pregnancies cost over $100,000 on average. Research suggests that in one-third of cases, at least one child has a serious lifelong health problem, such as cerebral palsy. Another study found that up to one-third of couples having triplets end up divorcing within 2-3 years. So my advice here is, be careful. You may get what you ask for.
